In the upcoming Asia Cup 2023, all eyes will be on
Suryakumar Yadav and Sanju Samson as they compete for a golden chance to secure
a spot in the 15-member squad for the ODI World Cup 2023. During the recent ODI
series against West Indies, both players had their moments, with Samson scoring
a fifty in the final ODI and Suryakumar having a relatively mediocre series with
scores of 19, 24, and 35.
With the World Cup deadline on September 5, the Asia Cup
tournament becomes a crucial opportunity for both Suryakumar and Samson to
prove their worth and cement their positions in the World Cup squad. Before the
deadline, India will play two matches in the Continental Cup against Pakistan
and Nepal, giving the players a chance to showcase their skills and make an
impact.
KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are set to make a comeback during
the Asia Cup after missing the West Indies tour. Given their stellar
performances in ODIs last year, they are likely to be part of the playing XI.
However, this means there will be only one spot available for either Samson or
Suryakumar in the team. Suryakumar's X-factor ability has earned him backing,
but he has only shown glimpses of his potential in the ODI format so far.
Suryakumar has played 26 ODIs, scoring 511 runs at an
average of 24.33, primarily being used as a finisher. However, he has struggled
to adjust to the tempo of the ODI format. On the other hand, Samson has played
13 ODIs, accumulating 390 runs, and has displayed flexibility in the batting
lineup. But with KL Rahul being considered the first-choice wicketkeeper,
Samson might have to settle for a specialist batter role.
The Asia Cup will be a direct shootout between Suryakumar
and Samson, and the player who impresses the selectors more is likely to secure
a place in the ODI World Cup 2023 squad. Both players would be eager to make
the most of this opportunity and prove their mettle on the international stage.
