The BCCI has announced the runners-up for the five teams in
the inaugural edition of the Women's Premier League.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on
Wednesday announced five franchises of the 'Premier League Women' - the inaugural
edition of the Indian Women's T20 tournament. Adani Sporstline, Royal
Challengers and JSW were among the winning teams.
"BCCI announces successful runners-up for Women's Premier League. The valuation of the combined contribution is INR 4669.99 Cr. Check out the five franchises with ownership rights for #WPL,” BCCI wrote on Twitter.
The five cities that will participate in the inaugural
edition of the Women's Premier League are Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi
and Lucknow. Indian conglomerate Adani Group acquired the Ahmedabad brand,
through its sports business Adani Sportsline Pvt Ltd. Ahmedabad team also
fetched the highest price with INR 1289 crore.
Indiawin Sports Pvt Ltd - part of the Reliance Group which
also owns the Mumbai Indians and the Indian Men's Premier League - bought the
Mumbai franchise for a whopping INR 912.99 crore. Similarly, Royal Challengers
Group, owners of the Bengaluru men's team, won the national title in the
women's edition of the T20 tournament, spending INR 901 crore.
A similar trend followed for the Delhi franchise, where JSW
Group - owners of the Capitals team in the men's league - won the match for INR
810 crore.
Capri Global are the new entrants as they spent INR 757
crore to acquire the Lucknow franchise.
Earlier, BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed that the women's
T20 tournament - which people believed to be called the women's 'IPL' - was
renamed the Women's Premier League (WPL). In a series of tweets, Shah also
revealed the charge for WPL breaking the record set by his colleague in 2008.
"Today is a historic day in cricket as bidding for #WPL Premier team broke the record for Men's Premier IPL in 2008! Congratulations to the winners as we got Rs.4669.99 Cr in total bid", Shah tweeted.

and sets the stage for a transformational journey not just for our women
cricketers, but for the entire sports community. #WPL will bring significant
change to women's cricket and ensure an environment that benefits all stakeholders.
