Indian team WTC final: IPL 2023 - Three ODIs in IPL 2023
will decide the future of KL Rahul. The sacked vice-president is expected to
lose his place in the India Playing XI for the third Test. However, the team's
management still trusts his ability in international situations. But for Rahul,
it will not be an easy task if Shubman Gill scores in the last two Tests of the
Border Gavaskar Trophy.
News channel says has said that Rahul will lose his place
to Gill in the Indore and Ahmedabad Tests. Now the coaches are wondering if he
should play in the Irani Cup instead.
To catch a flight to England for the WTC finals, Rahul
needs to score runs in all 3 ODIs in the IPL.
“He will remain in the plan if he regains his form. The
only opportunities he will have are the ODI and IPL series. But of course if
Shubman gets any runs, he will challenge the team selection," a senior
official told InsideSport on Monday.
The Selection Committee headed by Shiv Sundar Das will
select the team for the WTC Finals (if India qualifies) and the IPL. But many
will run in Rahul's style. With Shubman in fine form and Mayank Agarwal also
regaining his form, Rahul is racing against time. BCCI will keep the team at
least one month before the end of WTC (June 7).
With confidence on the ground after facing the ax as
vice-captain, Rahul now faces a race against time. The best way to keep fit
would have been to play national cricket. However, home time is over. Iran's
only cup match will start on March 1 and the coaches will decide whether to
send the opener to play one season instead of being with the squad for the
Australia series.
"It is up to the coaches and team managers to decide
whether Rahul should play against Irani. Of course, he must be playing to find
his rhythm in red ball cricket. But ODI and IPL series are also good
parameters,” said the official.
KL Rahul in the last 12 months:
Rahul suffered a lot in the test.
He ended up breaking even with 30 points, scoring 8, 12,
10, 22, 23, 10, 2, 20, 17, 1 in his last 10 minutes.
In the current series against Australia, he managed only
20, 17 and 1.
The statistics have also been devastating over the past 12
months.
He scored only 13.57. R Ashwin (37.00) and Mohammad Shami
(21.80) averaged better than the fly-half in those 12 months.
Former Indian pacer Venkatesh Prasad has urged KL Rahul to
snub IPL to play county cricket and get fit. However, BCCI will not allow any
of the star players to leave IPL for local cricket.
“With KL holding on for the remaining 2 games, if he is
picked in the 11, Indore is his best chance to return to form and silence
critics like me. Others should play local cricket, perform well and come back
to the Test side," Prasad said on Twitter.
