Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) played
the penultimate match of the IPL 2023 season at Chepauk on Wednesday. Chasing
176 to win, CSK lost only three points and the visitors held their nerve to
secure two vital points.
Jos Buttler's half-century and important cameos from others
helped RR post 175/8 in their 20 overs. Although Devon Conway scored a fifty in
reply, the visitors seemed to be going nowhere in the hunt until MS Dhoni
decided to wind the clock.
Even with 40 runs needed from the last two overs, Dhoni and
Ravindra Jadeja were hopeful that a CSK win was still on the cards and even
reduced the tie to just seven in three balls. However, Sandeep Sharma
surrendered the pressure to ensure that Chennai lost all three points.
On that note, let's take a look at three moments in the
game that caught the attention of fans:
Ravindra Jadeja's double wicket is over
Ravindra Jadeja has been in sensational bowling lately,
having won the man of the match award in their previous match against Mumbai
Indians. In a ground where no other CSK spinner was consistent, Jadeja took the
maximum angle and made an impossible delivery.
RR, despite losing Yashasvi Jaiswal late on, got off to a
good start thanks to a good goal from Devdutt Padikkal. While Jos Buttler continued
to play his natural game, Padikkal provided the much-needed boost that the team
expected. At 88/1 in nine overs, it looked like the Royals might cross 200.
However, in the space of three deliveries, Jadeja
collapsed. He dismissed Padikkal first, then bowled enough peaches to dismiss
RR skipper Sanju Samson for a duck.
There could have been three wickets at one point if Moeen
Ali had bowled Ravichandran Ashwin firmly in the first over.
MS Dhoni's sixes in the last over
The debate over whether MS Dhoni will bat for CSK is
intensifying as the batsman plays another impressive batting role at No.8. they
needed 54 runs off 18 balls, but Dhoni and Jadeja kept finding boundaries
throughout the over to keep them alive.
21 runs are important in the last over, and after a few
wides and a yorker is done well, the balance is strong and 19 runs are
important in five balls. However, MS Dhoni smashed the next two balls for a
sudden six and the tie was down to just seven in three.
Although CSK did not win the match, the sixes from Dhoni
convinced the fans that even at the age of 41, he is still one of the best
finishers in the business.
Sandeep Sharma's three yorkers gave RR the win
With seven runs required in three balls and MS Dhoni
improving on the strike, RR seemed to have lost the plan. However, Sandeep
Sharma proved how valuable experience is in such situations as he opted for
plan B and kept it simple.
The pacer tried to hit his yorker through the wicket to
Dhoni and then a wide yorker through the wicket to Jadeja. CSK managed to
collect three teams in the last three overs as RR secured a thrilling win. Fans
praised Sandeep for believing in his skills under pressure while playing the
ball arguing that he is one of the best finishers in the game with Dhoni.
