Young Indian racer Jehan Daruvala made a successful Formula
1 test debut this week with eight-time constructor winner McLaren and is now
eligible for Super Lience. This 23-year-old, who aspires to be India's third
Formula 1 rider, will ride in Silverstone on Tuesday and Wednesday in the
winning challenger of the Woking 2021 team - the MCL35M.
The test was for Jehan's first tasting of F1 machines, and
in two days he drove a total of more than 130 laps, which is more than double
the distance that F1 drivers will cover next week at the British Grand Prix.
Twitted “What a couple of days it’s been!… An unreal experience driving a Formula 1 car for the first-time round Silverstone. A big thank you again to everyone that made this happen, I had lots of fun and learned so much in just two days”
Time on the track helped him get enough points to apply for
the Super License, which is required for Formula 1 racing.
Jehan, who has been running smoothly for two days now, is
currently racing with the Italian Prema team in the Formula 2 Championship, a
feeder series one step below Formula 1 and third in the overall classification.
“I really enjoyed my first time driving a Formula One car. I
felt immediately at home and while it was physically more demanding than
anything I have driven in the past, I didn't have any issues with my fitness,”
Jehan was quoted as saying in a media release on Friday.
According to Jehan, this experience allowed him to
understand well how teams work during F1 weekends.
"It allowed us to work on the running plan and finish
everything we mapped out. We have created a mixture of long fuel runs as well
as shorter low fuel runs with different tire connections. This gives me a good
idea of how the teams are doing over the F1 weekend.
"Overall, I was very happy with how the two days went,
how I dealt with it and the milestone we completed. I feel like I'm approaching
the limit with each lap and I can't wait to drive one of these cars again. ,
"he added. "he added.
Jehan, who remains part of the Red Bull Junior Team, is a
three-time F2 winner and has recorded 12 stages in this category this season
alone, including five places in the top three of six rounds.
He wants to be the first Indian to win a Formula 2 title
this season. Currently, there are only two Indian drivers in F1 - Narain
Karthikeyan and Karun Chandhok.
