Atletico Madrid have confirmed that they have reached an
agreement to sign French player Antoine Griezmann permanently from Barcelona,
under contract until 2026. Griezmann has been on loan at Atletico since
August 2021 after a difficult season at the Camp Nou, followed by 120 million
euros (116.5 million dollars) movement in 2019.
"Griezmann has signed a contract that ties him to our
club until June 30, 2026," Atletico said in a statement on Monday. The
2018 World Cup winner has been central to Diego Simeone's management plans in
the past but has been reduced to a substitute in the current campaign as
Atletico attempt to avoid a mandatory £40m payment if he plays some games.
As the World Cup approaches and Griezmann is eager to prove
his worth, Atletico and Barcelona have negotiated a new contract, with
Barcelona president Joan Laporta confirming the deal at a club press conference
on Sunday.
"It is for 20 million euros plus four more in variables," said Laporta.
"There is another clause in the deal to sell the player, which is that if Atletico decide to sell him in the future they will have to pay us the difference that remains, up to the value of the 40 million which was agreed before."
Atletico have not disclosed the value of the new deal.
Griezmann scored 303 times, scoring 144 goals, during his two seasons in the capital. He scored 35 goals in 102 games for Barcelona, winning the Copa del Rey there in 2021.
