To manage Mohammad Shami's role, India is expected to be
rested in the third Test in Indore and replaced by Umesh Yadav. And KL Rahul
can also make Shubman Gill play the first Test of the series.
In a series where
the runners hit the highest number, Shami managed just 29.7 overs in three
innings. However, it is understood that red flags have been raised regarding
Shami's performance and in the upcoming Indian Premier League, the team
management has decided to rest him.
With Jasprit Bumrah already sidelined for a long time,
India is not willing to take chances with Shami as in Umesh they have a very
reliable replacement. Above all, with the Test World Championship being played
in England where Shami would be the key man in attack.
Since replacing an injured Bumrah in the last minute of the
T20 World Cup last October-November, Shami was rested for the subsequent tour
of New Zealand and Bangladesh. Not part of India's T20 squad, he played five of
the six ODIs contested before the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The decision to rest
and rotate players is now made by team management based on reports from
strength and conditioning coaches and physios.
We have always relied on Umesh in the past to deliver home
runs. Since the start of 2017, no pacer has taken more wickets than Umesh's 65
in the Indian series and his strike rate of 37.8 during that period is second
only to Shami. And he is the only Indian fast bowler to take five wickets in
that period. With his ability to hit bridges and his incredible pace, Umesh is
a valuable asset in the zone for India and is also effective when it comes to
reverse-swing.
Gill coming in place of Rahul fits the expectations. Even
before the start of the series, there was a question about the place of the
Karnataka opener. However, the Indian team management continued to support
Rahul, mainly because of his performance overseas. But in the two Tests in
which he played this series, Rahul had figures of 20, 17 and 1 and did not look
like his usual performances in Nagpur and Delhi.
At the end of the Delhi Test, captain Rohit Sharma and head
coach Rahul Dravid insisted that Rahul's performances in England and South Africa
made them stay with Rahul. However, at the end of the Test, as the selectors
sat down to select teams for the remaining two Tests, Rahul dropped the
vice-captain tag.
