The journey as the president of the Board of Control for
Cricket in India (BCCI) seems to be coming to an end for Sourav Ganguly who
first took over the job in 2019. Roger Binny, who was part of India's World
Cup-winning team in 1983, is believed to be the favorite for the role Ganguly
will vacate. While no official announcement has been made on the matter yet,
former India coach Ravi Shastri is happy to see Binny at the top of the table.
"Roger's name came up and I was happy, he was my
colleague at the World Cup. It is continued here because he was the president
of the Karnataka State Cricket Association and now he has become the president
of the BCCI. I am very happy because he is the World Cup winner who is the
first president in the history of BCCI," Shastri said during an interview
at the Mumbai Press Club on Wednesday, as reported by Sportstar. Binny has
filed his candidacy for the BCCI president post but it is not known whether
Ganguly will also be on the board or not. Ganguly was reportedly eager to
continue as the leader of the council but did not get the support he needed
from other members. Reacting to this development, Shastri said, "nothing
is permanent in life".
"As I read in the media, I don't think anyone has a
second term as president. So, according to the situation, it gives another
cricketer a chance. Nothing is permanent in life but you can do some temporary
things and move on,” said Shastri.
"What I'm doing today doesn't mean I'll be doing the
same thing in three years. New people will come in, new people will take over.
In a way, it's good."
Shastri believes that Binny, a former president of the
Karnataka State Cricket Association, has the qualifications to serve as the
BCCI President. "His commitment is undeniable, you look at his integrity,
his character... and as I said he is a World Cup winner. He has checked all the
boxes to be the BCCI president," Shastri said.
“Being a cricketer himself, he will see that the interest of
the cricketers is the most important thing, not the rank that will support
themselves, but the rank. Basically, domestic cricket. I think it has been
given a lot of attention, but it could have been given more attention,” Shastri
said. He added, "He's a very lovable man, he has a mind of his own. He may
not be the go-getter, but when he opens his mouth, he can be heard clearly,
especially in 'something about cricket,' he said. Talking about the things that
the BCCI needs to improve under the new president, Shastri was quick to point
out the need to improve the infrastructure and facilities at the stadium.
"The most important thing is that the things on the
pitch are improved significantly. We will insist," he said.
