Prithvi Shaw's arrival on the English cricket scene for the
One-day Cup was accompanied by a clear objective. Once hailed as the "next
big thing," Shaw's career trajectory had taken a downturn over the past
few months, plagued by injuries and off-field controversies that dimmed his
shine. Despite an initial surge marked by a Test century against West Indies in
2018, his international journey seemed to lose its way. However, a recent
performance showcased why he remains a formidable force.
On a remarkable Wednesday, Shaw's innings of 244 off 153
balls for Northamptonshire in England's One-Day Cup tournament against Somerset
not only captivated audiences but also etched his name as the first Indian to
achieve a double century in this competition. At 23 years old, he follows in
the footsteps of Cheteshwar Pujara as the only other Indian to secure a score
of over 150 in this format. Shaw's century arrived in just 81 balls, and he
seamlessly reached the 200-run milestone in 129 balls.
This young cricketer, embarking on his maiden county season,
adorned his innings with 28 boundaries and 11 sixes, crafting a second List A
double century. This monumental achievement marked his ninth List A century,
the first since his 165 against Karnataka during the Vijay Hazare Trophy
semifinal, leading Mumbai to victory in the 2020-21 season.
In his third appearance for Northamptonshire, Shaw brought
up his maiden hundred for the team in just 81 deliveries. Undeterred, he
powered his way to the 200-run mark in a mere 129 balls, bolstered by 24 fours
and eight sixes, propelling Northamptonshire to a commanding 415/8 after opting
to bat first.
The echoes of Shaw's prowess have resonated before; in
February 2021, he secured an unbeaten 227 against Puducherry during the Vijay
Hazare Trophy, marking his maiden List A double hundred.
Despite his earlier promising performances, Shaw had slipped
down India's selection hierarchy. A stellar show of 379 runs in a Ranji Trophy
match against Assam was overshadowed by a lackluster IPL stint with Delhi
Capitals. His form waned, and he found himself benched midway through the tournament.
Shaw's last appearance for India was during the Sri Lanka
tour in July 2021. While he was part of the T20I squad against New Zealand at
home earlier in the year, he was excluded from the ongoing series against West
Indies.
Off the field, the talented opener encountered challenges as
well. His journey has been colored by a blend of ups and downs, resilience, and
learning moments.
In his 56 List A games, Shaw's impressive tally stands at
2687 runs, reflecting an average of 51.67. In his initial two outings for
Northamptonshire, he contributed scores of 26 and 34.
Shaw's recent innings has reignited hopes and ignited
conversations, painting a picture of a cricketer determined to rewrite his
narrative and recapture the spotlight.
