India recorded the biggest win in ODI history and defeated Sri Lanka by 317 runs

India beat Sri Lanka by a record 317 runs in the third ODI to clinch the three-match series 3-0 on Sunday.

Virat Kohli lit up the dead rubber with an epic 166 not out, his third century in four innings, as India thrashed Sri Lanka by a record 317 runs in the third ODI to sweep the series here on Sunday. Skipper Rohit Sharma (42 off 49) and Shubman Gill (116 off 97) shared a good 95-run opening partnership before Kohli (166 off 110) propelled India to an impressive 390 for five with his 74th international and 46th in 50 series. Sri Lanka settled quickly, a high ball from Mohammad Siraj who hit four times in 10 overs to shut the door on the opposition.

Sri Lanka had a paltry 73 in 22 overs, showing the difference between the two teams. It is the highest margin of victory by points in the history of men's ODIs.

The night truly belonged to King Kohli. The 34-year-old, who ended a nearly three-year wait for an Asian international hundred last year, has shown that he is back to full form.

Kohli is three short of matching Sachin Tendulkar's ODI record of 49 centuries. Kohli's turnover rate is remarkable as he has hit 46 tons in 259 innings while Tendulkar has taken 452 innings to reach 49 centuries.

Before Kohli took over, Gill played a superb game en route to his second ODI hundred. With that effort, he repaid the trust of the team's managers who selected him to open ahead of Ishan Kishan, who entered the series with two hundreds to his credit.

Lahiru Kumara's 23 runs in the opening slot of the innings got India going. After Rohit gave him a six over deep mid-wicket, Gill collected four consecutive boundaries off Kumara, three outside off and one on the full side leg.

Rohit also looked good at the other end, but pulled against the pace of the game while attempting one of his signature, front leg pulls.

Gill and Kohli later shared a 131-run stand that troubled the Sri Lankan bowlers.

Kohli started the innings with a huge margin before using his excellent runs between the wickets. His first eight sixes came in the 80s and he was a dud for a long time, leaving him with a chuckle.

He got in on 99 in the limit which came when he matched up with Ashen Bandara and Jeffrey Vandersay, who raced for the ball through deep leg and deep midwicket. The two defenders were later stretched out on the field.

The last 10 saw India score 116 runs with Kohli going ballistic after his century. Sixes rained from his remarkable but long-on with a shadow on MS Dhoni's chopper which gave Kohli a big laugh. Most of his highs have come in the bullpen area.

In response to India's massive total, Sri Lanka has not joined the hunt. Siraj had Avishka Fernando slid wide in the second round of the innings.

It was the movement after that that Siraj was going through the high order. Mohammad Shami and Kuldeep Yadav shared a few wickets.
