Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Marsh and Jhye Richardson will
return after injury setbacks for Australia's much-anticipated ODI tour of India
as preparations ramp up ahead of the World Cup.
On Thursday, Cricket Australia revealed the 16-man squad for
the three-match series, which will begin next month after the Border-Gavaskar
Trophy. Maxwell and Marsh missed the entire Big Bash League with foot and ankle
injuries respectively, while Richardson was out for the Perth Scorchers final
against the Brisbane Heat with a hamstring strain.
World No 2 ranked ODI bowler Josh Hazlewood has been ruled
out of the white-ball format as he continues his rehabilitation from an
Achilles injury. "With just over seven months until the World Cup, these
games in India are important in our preparations. Glenn, Mitchell and Jhye are
great players and what we think the team can be like in October." George
Bailey breeders in a press release. "It will be great for Josh to be part
of this series, but we have taken a defensive approach ahead of a very
important winter in England that he will be an important part of."
Marcus Stoinis and Cameron Green were also named in the ODI
squad, along with wicketkeeper Josh Inglis and paceman Sean Abbott.
"It's going to be a big stretch, especially with the
World Cup in India at the end of the year," Maxwell told reporters on
Thursday. "It's a good opportunity for us to work on some things and
prepare our game plan."
Western Australian batsman Ashton Agar was included despite
flying back from the subcontinent on Wednesday after being left out of the Test
squad.
The 29-year-old traveled to India for the Border-Gavaskar
Trophy as Australia's second-choice spinner but fears over his form emerged
after he struggled in the nets during a training camp for Bengaluru. Agar was
eventually not selected for the first two Tests at Nagpur in Delhi and was sent
back to Australia after falling out of favor with the national selectors.
"It's not a good situation, but you try to do the best
you can," Agar told reporters on Wednesday. "I'm 29 now, I've had a
lot of ups and downs in the game. I'm in good shape so nothing stresses me out
too much. "There is a clear message, they told me that it is a clear way
to continue the message, he stepped up, walked straight and tried to improve.
“No more bitterness around this, it's old school thinking. I
just try to give what I can to help where I can.
Agar will play domestic cricket for Western Australia before
returning to India next month.
National coach Tony Dodemaide said Agar "worked
backwards" in India, but the selectors did not see Matthew Kuhnemann as a
major threat in India's attack. Dodemaide told reporters on Wednesday,
"(Agar) opened up well for us, and he worked his back to get it right, to
show and be an option.
"We understand very well that Ashton has not
tried."
