"Virat Kohli Sacrifices His...": Ex-India Star On Team's Selection Headache vs New Zealand

After defeating Sri Lanka, India took a 1-0 lead against New Zealand in the ODI series. With KL Rahul unavailable for the New Zealand series due to personal reasons and Shreyas Iyer ruled out with injury, Ishan Kishan has been brought in to complement Suryakumar Yadav in India's middle order. Notably, Kishan did not feature in the ODI series against Sri Lanka, while Suryakumar played in the final match.

Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar suggested that Virat Kohli should sacrifice his country. 3 spaces, which can solve India's selection headache.

He believes Kohli should make way for in-form fly-half Shubman Gill, and batted at No.4 instead, something he did in 2014 to accommodate Ambati Rayudu in the playing XI.

"It's going to be another trick, one guy is going to be really angry. I have an idea to fix this mess. Ask Shubman Gill to bat at No. 3, he looks like he can handle the situation, then Virat Kohli sacrifices his No. 3 for No. 4. He did it with Ambati Rayudu once, many years ago against Sri Lanka. So that might be a solution. Ishan Kishan after his double, left and right over is not a bad idea,” Manjrekar told Star Sports.

Talking about the 1st ODI, Shubman Gill scored a brilliant 208 as India defeated New Zealand by 12 runs in the first One-Day International in Hyderabad on Wednesday despite a brilliant century from Michael Bracewell. India looked set to win with New Zealand struggling at 131-6 as they chased 350 after half-time and Gill scored only his 10th double hundred in ODI history.

A different Bracewell responded by taking 140 from 78 before falling in the last over when Shardul Thakur bowled him in front of the wicket.

Indian fast bowlers Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj bowled New Zealand before a late spell from Bracewell gave them hope of a thrilling victory.

Finn Allen hit an airy 40 at the top of the order but New Zealand faced a huge defeat as soon as Siraj sent Latham back for the sixth wicket. Bracewell was joined by left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner, who hit 57 off 45 balls in a massive partnership of 162 before falling to Siraj.

Bracewell hit 12 fours and 10 sixes but ended up on the sidelines as Siraj was the pick of the Indian bowlers with figures of 4-46.

Earlier, the 23-year-old Gill helped India to an impressive total of 349-8 after an innings covering 149 balls and featuring 19 fours and nine sixes.
