Indian wicket keeper Dinesh Karthik also feels skipper Rohit
Sharma has earned a lot of respect as an injury-hit man. Virat Kohli's India
team were run out by Bangladesh in the 2nd ODI by five points on Wednesday.
Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer capped India's remarkable
comeback with their batting prowess, even as Bangladesh dashed the hosts' hopes
by winning the final match at the Shere Bangla National Stadium on Wednesday.
Defending against a bad thumb injury in this brilliant series, India's veteran
batsman Rohit Sharma bowled a blinder against Bangladesh. Praising the Indian
skipper, captain glover Dinesh Karthik felt that Rohit has earned respect as a
leader for his injuries.
The Indian captain reflected on Iyer's knock against the
Litton Das-led side in the second ODI in Dhaka. Before Rohit struck for nine
and saved India from a dire situation, it was Iyer's heroics that kept the
hosts in the hunt in Dhaka. The leading batsman smashed a game-changing
half-century for Virat Kohli's star team in the recent closing session. India's
top scorer in the decisive series, Iyer scored 82 off 97 balls.
Speaking to Cricbuzz after Bangladesh's famous win over
India in the 2nd ODI, Indian wicket-striker Karthik hailed Iyer as India's most
consistent batsman in the 50-over format this year. “I think the way he's been
playing for a while is fantastic. He has made over 700 runs this year and you
can see the confidence. One Day International cricket is a perfect fit for him,
he likes that he can pick up a few balls and start bowling. The game is awesome
and the truth is that these days every time he comes in, they test him with a
smaller ball and he comes in really well, almost every game,” Karthik said.
Talking about the India-style batsman, Karthik felt that
Iyer always wanted to finish the game for the Asian giants like Kohli's run
machine. "Yes he has a terrible miss which may be because of the low ball
but every time he goes through you can see he is a service man and he wants to
be with the team at the end. He's good with the shot, he dominates every time
he hits it. Yes, wickets fell on his side but he never gave up and I admire him
for it. He almost took India to a place - I think it's really if you want to
make a name for yourself as a player, you want to make a name for yourself like
what Virat Kohli has done over the years, those are the games you want 120-130
not out, that's a big difference," added Karthik.
An Iyer on the track managed to overtake Shikhar Dhawan to
become the Indian team's highest ODI run-scorer in 2022. The all-white maverick
has scored over 720 runs in 16 matches for India this season. “You want to not
be in the pursuit and be the one who brings the country home. It was something
he would miss today. Scoring 82 is all well and good, but that's only when you
cross the line — being a middle-ranked hitter and winning games like this. When
you start doing it regularly, you feel like the team is afraid of you,”
concluded Karthik.
