Dinesh Karthik and
Rishabh Pant have not been convinced of the chances given so far in the T20
World Cup. For the India vs England semi-final, Ravi Shastri wanted Pant to
take the wicket-keeper's role against Karthik. With the Super 12 now complete,
the Indian team is all focused on the semi-final clash against England in the
2022 World Cup. India put in exemplary performances during the tournament, with
Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav being the the best players at bat. But, going into
the crucial clash against Jos Buttler's men, former India head coach Ravi
Shastri wants the team to change the batting order.
Meanwhile,
wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik has recommended him behind the stumps,
mainly because of his "finishing" ability. Pant was given the chance
to continue in their match against Zimbabwe but he didn't take advantage of it,
scoring a measly 3 out of 5.
Still, Shastri
wanted Pant to replace Karthik against England, and not because of the
southpaw's past performances against the opposition. "Dinesh is a great
team player. But when it comes to a game against England or New Zealand, just
to see their fight, I think you need a strong southpaw who can turn it on, and
who is a match winner and a left-hander." hander," Shastri told
broadcaster Star Sports after India's win over Zimbabwe on Sunday. Commenting
on Pant's impressive knock against England, Shastri said: "He did well
against England. He won a match recently in their win over England, a
one-day. I will go with Pant, not only because he plays here, but because of
the X-factor he can bring to the half. "
Shastri also said
that the fact that Pant is a left-hander could also be a big factor for India
because of the small gap in Adelaide, where the match will be played on
Thursday.
"You are playing in Adelaide, short boundaries square, another reason why a left-hander should be there to disrupt the England attack. If you have too many right-handers, there is a sense of sameness to it. England have a nice attack, a varied attack of left-handers and right-handers.
"You need a left-hander in your team, who can be dangerous and win you a game in the back overs even if you have lost 3 or 4 wickets at the top," Shastri asserted.
Although Pant did
not play against Zimbabwe, Karthik was a regular with the bat in other matches,
scoring 1, 6 and 7 in the three matches he had a chance to bat.
