Australia Win Women's T20 World Cup For Sixth Time

Australia won their sixth T20 World Cup by beating South Africa by 19 runs in the final at Newlands on Sunday.

Australia won the Women's T20 World Cup for the sixth time by beating South Africa by 19 runs in the final at Newlands on Sunday. Opener Beth Mooney powered Australia's innings, scoring an unbeaten 74 at 156-for-six. South Africa did not get the required pace and were restricted to 137 for six despite flyhalf Laura Wolvaardt hitting 61 from 48 balls.

Wolvaardt and semi-final hero Tazmin Brits struggled to find space on the pitch and managed just 17 points before the Brits were caught by middle Darcie Brown in the last ball of the fifth over.

Marizanne Kapp hit two boundaries but was out for 11 and South African skipper Sune Luus was out for two. This time, the home side needed 103 more runs off 56 balls.

Wolvaardt and the strong Chloe Tryon gave the crowd around 15,000 hope with a 55-for-37 fourth-quarter attacking partnership, but the game ended well when Wolvaardt was on the feet before Megan Schutt's wicket in the 17th.

The left-hander Mooney played an impressive innings, scoring 74 runs off 53 balls as the partners hit hard.

Ash Gardner and Grace Harris both punched in the face of captain Meg Lanning and appeared to be told to go get their punches.

South African footballers have always played well and are supported by enthusiastic media. Shabnim stalwarts Ismail and Kapp each took two wickets.

But Australia showed their character by defending their collective with a game and commitment that put the South African bomb under constant pressure.
