Singapore Open: PV Sindhu, HS Prannoy Fight Their Way Into Quarter-Finals

Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu and informed HS Prannoy advanced to the next quarter-finals after registering wins in the Singapore Open Super 500 badminton event here on Thursday.

Third seed Sindhu held off a spirited challenge from Vietnam's world number 59 Thuy Linh Nguyen 19-21, 21-19, 21-18 in the women's singles competition to face China's Han Yue.

Prannoy, world number 19, claimed his second win in three weeks against world number four and third seed Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei 14-21 22-20 21-18 in an hour and nine minutes of the encounter.

The 29-year-old Indian, who is chasing his five-year-old title, will next face Kodai Naraoka in Japan.

A day after a crushing victory over compatriot Kidambi Srikanth, Mithun Manjunath's run ended with a 10-21, 21-18, 16-21 loss to Nhat Nguyen of Ireland. Ashmita Chaliha also failed to advance to the tournament, defeating Thailand's Busanan Ongbamrungphan, who lost 9-21, 13-21 to Han Yue of China.

Two-time Commonwealth Games gold medalist Saina Nehwal and her upcoming men's doubles match between MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila will also clash later in the day.
