India's Neeraj Chopra will compete in the men's throw event
at the 2022 World Athletics Championships this Thursday. After a historic gold
at the 2022 Tokyo Olympics, Neeraj will attempt to win India's first WAC medal
since 2003. Former long jumper Anju Bobby George's 2003 bronze is still the
only World Cup medal won by an Indian.
The qualifying round is scheduled for July 21, day 7 of the
championship. The final is on July 23 (July 24 India). Speaking to TOI ahead of
the competition, Neeraj said, "In athletics, it's very simple. When you
throw, you have to be the farthest, when you jump, you have to be the highest,
and when you run, you have to be the fastest" is how Neeraj puts it in
this interaction.
In June, Chopra won the gold medal at the Kuortan Games in
Finland after recording a throw of 86.69m in his first attempt. He was behind
Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago and world champion Anderson Peters of
Grenada.
