Axar Patel ruled out of Rajkot ODI

Axar Patel's absence in the upcoming third ODI against Australia in Rajkot has cast a shadow of uncertainty over his participation in the World Cup. Cricbuzz has learned that the talented Indian all-rounder, grappling with a left quadriceps strain, hasn't made a sufficient recovery to warrant inclusion in the squad. Currently, he is undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.

This development opens the door for Ravichandran Ashwin, who has been drafted in as Axar's replacement. Ashwin has been in scintillating form in the first two ODIs, bagging four crucial wickets and showcasing his exceptional bowling skills, particularly causing problems for the Australian batsmen in the Indore match. This has led to growing calls for his inclusion in the World Cup squad.

Inside sources from the BCCI, however, suggest that Axar, initially preferred over Ashwin, is on track for a comeback to the Indian team well ahead of the World Cup. There are indications that Axar might be prepared for the World Cup warm-up matches, adding complexity to the selection process. As of now, Ashwin's chances appear bright, and the selectors have refrained from naming a replacement for Axar in the upcoming game.

This development comes concurrently with the national selectors deciding to rest Shubman Gill and Shardul Thakur for the Rajkot fixture, meaning they won't be part of the journey from Indore to Rajkot. On the flip side, the team will be boosted by the return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who were given rest for the initial two games of the ongoing three-match series. Jasprit Bumrah, rested after the first ODI in Mohali and absent in Indore, is expected to rejoin the squad in Rajkot, where the crucial third ODI against Australia is scheduled for September 27.

With the deadline for announcing the final 15-player World Cup squad looming on September 27, the selectors face a significant decision. Both India and Australia will depart from Indore for Rajkot on Tuesday afternoon. As of now, India holds a commanding 2-0 lead in the three-game series.
